Background of the Study

Fast food consumption has increased dramatically over the past few decades, particularly in urban areas, due to convenience and the growing availability of processed foods. In Sokoto State, this trend has contributed to rising obesity rates, particularly among the younger population. Obesity, a key risk factor for various chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, is becoming an alarming public health issue. The high-fat, high-sugar, and high-calorie nature of fast foods is a significant contributor to unhealthy weight gain. This study aims to investigate the relationship between fast food consumption and obesity rates in Sokoto State, exploring the factors that drive fast food consumption and its impact on public health.

Statement of the Problem

Obesity rates in Sokoto State are on the rise, and fast food consumption is suspected to play a key role in this trend. Despite efforts to promote healthy eating, fast food continues to be a popular choice, especially among youth and working adults. However, there is limited research specifically addressing the connection between fast food consumption and obesity in Sokoto State. This study seeks to examine how fast food consumption patterns influence obesity prevalence and identify potential interventions to combat this growing public health issue.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the relationship between fast food consumption and obesity rates in Sokoto State.
  2. To identify the demographic factors that influence fast food consumption patterns in Sokoto State.
  3. To explore the public’s knowledge and attitudes toward fast food and its impact on health.

Research Questions

  1. What is the relationship between fast food consumption and obesity rates in Sokoto State?
  2. Which demographic factors (e.g., age, gender, income) are most strongly associated with fast food consumption in Sokoto State?
  3. What is the level of public awareness regarding the health impacts of fast food consumption in Sokoto State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a positive correlation between fast food consumption and obesity rates in Sokoto State.
  2. Younger age groups and higher income levels are associated with increased fast food consumption in Sokoto State.
  3. The level of public awareness regarding the health risks of fast food consumption is low in Sokoto State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on residents of Sokoto State aged 18-45, particularly in urban areas. Limitations may include difficulties in tracking fast food consumption accurately and the challenge of distinguishing fast food consumption from other dietary factors contributing to obesity.

Definitions of Terms

  • Fast Food: Pre-packaged or prepared food items that are quickly available, typically high in fat, sugar, and calories.
  • Obesity: A condition characterized by excessive body fat, typically defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher.
  • Dietary Patterns: The habitual intake of food and drink, including the types and quantities consumed.
